The Adopted Curriculum of a school or district can be called by a variety of names (District Curriculum, Master Curriculum, Consensus Curriculum, Board Approved Curriculum, etc.). If you have the Adopted Curriculum tool enabled in your Atlas system, this allows users to receive a pre-approved curriculum, developed by select Curriculum Developers at your school/district, directly in their user copy of the map. Using this as a starting point, users then work collaboratively or individually to describe further when & how the instruction of the Adopted Curriculum will take place in their classrooms.

For Adopted Curriculum Developers
Adopted Curriculum Developers are the team assigned by school administration to the Adopted Curriculum maps and can access them via My Atlas > My Courses. They can start writing this curriculum using the same basics of developing any maps in Atlas.
Developing the Adopted Curriculum Unit Calendar
Adopted Curriculum Developers can add and edit units in the calendar of the Adopted Curriculum map. All units on the calendar will be marked with a gray icon denoting they are part of the Adopted Curriculum and will be published to associated user maps.
When editing AC Units, keep in mind that users may have added significant resources and curriculum details in their own copies. For this reason, whenever possible, it is essential to keep all AC edits within the context of existing units. For example:
- To add a new curriculum to the course, create a new unit, or add relevant content to a closely related existing unit, whichever is most appropriate.
Example: To add content about layers of the earth, you might add this to an existing unit on “Our Solar System” or create a new unit, whichever is more appropriate.
- To adjust the curriculum within a course, you can make reasonable changes to units so long as each unit still covers the same general topic.
Example: To adjust the curriculum on ecosystems or habitats, you should edit existing units already containing those topics.
Deleting a unit to start over will cause creating an additional unit in the associated user map, which may cause extra work for users to move their information to the new unit.
- To remove an entire unit from the course, delete the unit covering this topic.
Example: To remove a unit on “Our Solar System” simply delete it. Users will get to keep a copy for their records.
Do not rename and re-purpose existing units for another topic, as this may cause additional work for users and prevent them from retaining a copy of their work.
- Including suggested or optional units here will skew curriculum reports as you will not be able to tell if the user used these units or not.
- Units, standards, assessments, and attachments that are deleted from the AC map will remain in the associated user maps. They'll become available for deletion by the users.
- After receiving the Adopted Curriculum, users control the color and calendar placement of units in their user copy. Edits to the color and calendar placement of AC units are NOT reflected in user maps.
Developing the Adopted Curriculum Unit Planner
In the unit planner of an Adopted Curriculum map, specific categories (selected by your school) are denoted with a gray icon. The curriculum in these categories must be developed by the Adopted Curriculum Developers and then published to become visible in users’ maps.
Within Adopted Curriculum units, writers can add standards, text, and attachments just as they would with any map. After publishing, users will not be able to remove the Adopted Curriculum data (text, attachments, standards, and assessments) from their maps.
- Units, standards, assessments, and attachments that are deleted from the AC map will remain in the associated user maps. They'll become available for deletion by the users.
- Including suggested or optional curriculum here may skew reporting as you will not be able to tell if these types of the curriculum were taught by the user.
Publishing Changes to the Adopted Curriculum
When ready, Adopted Curriculum Developers can publish the Adopted Curriculum to the associated user maps. Please check with your school leadership before publishing if you have any questions.
1. Click Actions at the top right of the screen and click Publish.
2. Review the list of curriculum changes, and the associated users map receiving the changes.
3. Click Publish.
For Users Receiving Adopted Curriculum
Users assigned to a course associated with the Adopted Curriculum will receive updates directly in their User copy. The purpose of the Adopted Curriculum is to provide users a curriculum framework they can develop further for their classrooms. So, while users cannot delete Adopted Curriculum data from their map, they can add to it in several ways, indicating how they plan to teach or assess the Adopted Curriculum in their classrooms, and adding essential resources and additional content areas covered. Users do this using the same basics of developing any map in Atlas.
The Unit Calendar
When an Adopted Curriculum map is published, users will receive a copy of the Adopted Curriculum units labeled with a distinctive gray icon, which are set to receive updates whenever the Adopted Curriculum is updated and published. The Adopted Curriculum units cannot be deleted from users’ maps; however, users CAN do the following:
- Add units to reflect additional curriculum covered in their classrooms. Curriculum Developer-added units are unaffected by edits to the Adopted Curriculum.
- Modify the color and calendar placement of AC units to best suit their class. Users' changes to color and calendar placement of AC units are unaffected by edits to the Adopted map.
The Unit Planner: Free Text area
Users will see the same gray icon in their unit planner, indicating aspects of the Adopted Curriculum that cannot be removed. However, users CAN add supporting attachments to any category as needed.
The Unit Planner: Standards
When Standards or Outcomes are part of the Adopted Curriculum, users cannot delete the Standards marked by the gray icon. However, users CAN choose to target additional standards in their classrooms.
The Unit Planner: Assessments
When Assessments are part of the Adopted Curriculum, they are marked with a gray icon and cannot be deleted by users. However, users CAN choose to add more Assessments for use in their classrooms.
Additionally, users CAN decide to make the following changes to Adopted Curriculum Assessments, which are unaffected by future edits to the Adopted map:
- Re-order the Assessments. This allows users to choose the order that best suits their classroom.
- Edit the Assessment Method. This allows users to opt for a different approach in Assessing the Adopted Curriculum.
- Add Attachments. This allows users to upload supporting resources for Adopted Assessments.
- Assess additional Standards. This allows users to assess more than the Adopted Assessment requires.
For Administrators Managing the Adopted Curriculum
System Administrators can manage the course titles and course assignments of both Adopted and User maps and must understand how these are associated. There are three main areas for managing this process, each listed below, with associated actions you can take:
Manage Courses: Course Titles
- Identify which courses are/are not associated with the Adopted Curriculum.
- Confirm the approved Course Title, Subject, and Grade level of courses and ensure each is matched with the appropriate Adopted map.
- Publish curriculum from Adopted to User maps
Manage Courses: Course Assignments
- Add new Adopted and User maps
-
Associate and disassociate User maps
- Assign Curriculum Developers and Teachers to the appropriate maps
Admin Reports: Course list by Adopted Map
- Review all Adopted maps and the associated User maps on one screen.
Manage Courses: Course Titles
The Course Titles page allows you to review and manage the associations between Adopted Curriculum and User maps, ensuring that Adopted Curriculum will be published to the correct User maps.
By default, Adopted Curriculum maps publish into User maps that share the same Course Title, Subject, and Grade level. This page allows you to confirm or adjust these associations.
If you want an AC map to publishing into a User map of a different title or grade level, you can make exceptions to the above rule by selecting a different Adopted map for a Course Title by clicking the arrow button, then choose Assign Adopted Map.
Example: Biology (Adopted Curriculum map) needs to publish into Biology and Biology Honors (related User maps with different titles).
Maintaining your Course Titles list will make managing the Adopted Curriculum process easier. Please see our Support page on Course Titles for Admin capabilities that will help you do so.
Publishing Adopted Curriculum
When an Adopted Curriculum map is published, changes are copied into select areas within User maps without overwriting existing Curriculum writers' work. Adopted Curriculum Developers can publish changes they’ve made in their Adopted maps, but only System Administrators can publish several (or all) Adopted maps at once.
From the Admin Dashboard > Manage Courses > Course Titles tab:
1. Filter to the list of Course Titles with Adopted Curriculum.
2. Check the box(es) next to Course Titles you would like to publish their changes.
3. Click Bulk Actions.
4. Select Publish Adopted Curriculum.
5. Preview changes then click Publish
Manage Courses: Course Assignments
The Course Assignments page allows you to add, edit, and assign all maps to the appropriate faculty. When doing so, special care must be taken to avoid breaking the association between Adopted and User maps.
Adding Adopted Curriculum Courses
Most AC courses should already be set-up in your system, but if you need to add a new AC course, simply follow the steps to Add New Course and be sure to apply the AC Map Type that your school is using. Once you apply the Adopted Map Type to a course, the course becomes part of your Adopted Curriculum. Contact Atlas Support if you have any questions.
Be sure that the AC course you are adding is not already in your system. There can be only ONE AC version of each course and once set-up, it should not be changed.
Associate AC Course with User Maps
An AC course (indicated by Map Type) will automatically be associated with any other course that shares the same Course Title, Subject, and Grade. So, if you add more courses using the same three attributes (without the AC map type), these will be User courses that can receive the published curriculum. It is not required to apply a Map Type for user courses that receive Adopted Curriculum. Simply check or uncheck the box that says Include Adopted Map when creating/editing a course, and that map will be associated or disassociated with the Adopted Curriculum.
A check-mark identifies associated User maps in the "Include In Adopted Curriculum" column; this indicates they are associated with an Adopted map and can receive the published curriculum.
Admins can change users (writers) assigned to Adopted Curriculum maps in Users field. Still, other course attributes (Subject, Grade and Course Title) for Adopted maps should not change, as this can disassociate them from the User maps, preventing any curriculum from being published. Click here for more details about editing course attributes.
Course Map list by Adopted Map
This Admin Report is a great way to visualize the Adopted maps and all associated users maps, showing you who is assigned to each one. This report is only useful for reviewing the maps and associations; you cannot make changes from this page. Tip: Keep this page open in another tab, and refresh to see the adjustments you’ve made under Manage Courses and Course Titles.
From Admin Dashboard > Course Map List by Adopted Map in Reports box:
- Sort list by selecting any of the column headings.
- Select any underlined Course Name to generate a printable view of the Course Curriculum Map.
Go to the Actions menu.
- Click Print to print the report.
- Click Export to Word to export the report to an MS Word document.
- Click Export to Excel to export the report to an MS Excel document.
